To solve this for our latest project, I decided to tackle this head-on. The solution? An Anti-Snipe system, also called Popcorn Bidding. Simple idea, big impact.
Here's the thing about bid sniping: it's not just annoying for buyers. It actually hurts everyone.
Buyers spend hours watching a timer, stressed and waiting, only to get beaten by someone who placed a bid in the final 2 seconds. They feel cheated, and honestly, they are.
Sellers lose too. When the auction gets cut short by a sniper, the natural back-and-forth of competitive bidding never happens. The price never reaches what the item is actually worth.
It turns a marketplace into a speed contest. And that's not fair for anyone.
Think about theater popcorn: as long as kernels are still popping, the show isn't over.
Popcorn Bidding works the same way. Every time someone places a bid in the final minutes, the auction clock automatically gets more time added. The auction doesn't end until people genuinely stop bidding, not just because the buzzer went off.
Once we launched this system, the change was immediate.
